Royal Opera House Retail
London
2018

Drinkall Dean were appointed to design the retail space at the Royal Opera House, part of their ‘Open Up’ project in conjunction with Stanton Williams Architects. The brief was to design a new and contemporary retail space, yet one that would reflect the rich heritage of the institution. Our inspiration came from the ability of theatre to transport people and evoke emotions on many levels.

There are subtle reflections to this in the construction of the modular units; the tables, for example, are fitted with castors from grand pianos, at once allowing the space to be flexible and interchangeable, whilst giving the impression that the units are poised; like dancers en pointe. Even the book displays reference the shape of a music stand. Much of the retail furniture is large scale and heavy, conjuring a sense of the craftsmanship of musical instruments. The units are largely crafted in walnut with brass accents. The space itself is relaxed, and encourages extensive browsing. Drinkall Dean designed two circular display units that create a sweeping flow around the shop. They give relief from the more formal, modular tables and generate an explorative, tactile retail experience. The concept feels solid and permanent, but it is designed with ultimate flexibility in mind, using a suite of interchangeable components to allow for evolving product ranges and types.
